Centurion Verblyf - 2

Centurion is a suburb of Gauteng that lies between Pretoria and Midrand in Johannesburg. Given the massive expansion of both Centurion and the two larger cities, it is hard to tell where one ends and the next begins. Centurion accommodation is useful for business people given its proximity to both Pretoria and Johannesburg and also the flourishing businesses within Centurion itself.

Perhaps it goes without saying, but Centurion, like Joburg and Pretoria is located on the Highveld and thus has a similar climate – that is cool, dry winters and hot summers with afternoon thunder storms. The Hennops River, which runs through Centurion, has been known to flood when the rains are particularly heavy.

Centurion, like many urban settlements today, began as a group of farms. Clues as to these farms are given in the names of many of Centurion’s suburbs such as Zwartkop. The farmland in this area is quite rich in South African history as it was here that a number of the Anglo-Boer War (first and second) battles were fought. The Irene Camp Cemetery contains many well-preserved examples of the original tombstones where the Boer women and children who died in the concentration camps were buried. This place brings the Anglo-Boer War to life and is an interesting place to visit in Centurion if you are fascinated by South African history.

Another interesting historical place to visit is the original house of Jan Smuts, which has been preserved as a museum. It was once the farmhouse of the Doornkloof farm, owned by Smuts himself.

Back to the present day, Centurion is home to the second biggest shopping mall in Johannesburg, the Centurion Mall. The largest hospital in Africa (UNITAS) is located here too as well as two air force bases – Waterkloof Air Force Base and Swartkop Air Force Base. The Swartkop base is home to one of the three branches of the South African Air Force Museum for those particularly keen on aeroplanes and/or military-related subjects.
