Fittingly referred to as "the jewel of the Free State", Clarens is comfortably situated between the high sandstone Rooiberg and the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, in close proximity to the Golden Gate National Park and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. The scenery in Clarens is a well-known attraction for artists and photographers throughout the year, especially in autumn when the leaves turn a golden crisp colour.
Many local artists have opened their studios for the public to visit. The art galleries, charming church and historical museum are all worth visiting. The tiny “Cinderella Castle” in Naupoort Street , built using 50 000 beer bottles, is also a sight to behold.
There are many bushman (San) paintings to be found on the farms near the Highland Routes, along the foothills of the Maluti Mountains. The tranquil village environment, the magnificent views and the mild climate make Clarens a pleasant and stress free weekend getaway.
Popular with locals, Clarens is only a 3 hour drive from Johannesburg or Durban. Around the village square, Clarens boasts exceptional restaurants. Other fun-filled activities include fly fishing, hiking and for the more adventurous, abseiling and water rafting.

Still one of my favourite holiday destinations. So many beautiful, clearly marked and easily accessible hiking trails in Clarens and not too far away at the Golden Gate. The scenery that surrounds you is breathtaking. The quaint little shops, restaurants and coffee shops make this a unique destination.

The village of Clarens has plenty to see and do with many bars, restaurants and shops. Dogs are welcome in most places. The many mountain walking trails are great fun for 2-legged and 4-legged explorers, with magnificent views. Definitely worth a visit!
