Dullstroom Verblyf - 2
Dullstroom is a located in Mpumalanga, but is only about 2 hours from Gauteng. The small town was established in the early 1880’s when a group of Dutch settlers arrived and was named Dullstroom after the group’s leader, Wolterus Dull. The stroom part of the name (which means ‘stream’) refers to the abundance of water in the Dullstroom vicinity.
Dullstroom lies at an altitude of roughly 2100 metres above sea level, in the Steenkampsberg mountain range. This area is brimming with important waterways. The Crocodile River, which runs through the Kruger National Park, has its source in these mountains, as do the Lunsklip, Klip, Steelpoort and Elands Rivers, all important tributaries to larger, significant rivers. These rivers and there abundance of fish is what has led to Dullstroom’s reputation as South Africa’s trout fishing capital. It is often affectionately referred to as ‘Trouteng’ for this very reason.
Dullstroom is also favoured for its sub-alpine climate and often-misty conditions. These setting appeals largely because of the lifestyle associated with it. When you spend time in Dullstroom, the crisp, fresh mountain air will fill your lungs every morning, making you feel alive. When evening rolls around and the temperature drops to an unpleasant degree, you can retreat to your cosy country accommodation, light up a fire and crack open a good bottle of wine. Alternatively you can visit one of Dullstroom’s fine restaurants.
While trout-fishing is the main attraction, there are many other activities for you and your family to enjoy. Dullstroom is also known for the wild flowers, best seen between November and January, and the array of birdlife. Both of these spectacles can be spotted while hiking in the region or from horseback – two very nice activities. You can also go mountain biking or play a round of golf.
Dullstroom is very close to Kruger National Park and thus makes a great stop-over, or you can devote your whole trip to this lovable little town.
