Durbanville Accommodatie - 3
Officially Durbanville is a suburb of the City of Cape Town, however on the ground, Durbanville has a personality all its own.
Durbanville is located in the Northern Suburbs, on the outskirts of the city. This gives the area a decidedly rural feel, reinforced by the farmlands, visible from almost anywhere in Durbanville. Apart from its more rural atmosphere, Durbanville feels like a different city because it once was an independent settlement. It originally developed as a watering station for travellers in the 19th century. Little homesteads and shops sprung up around the spring which sparked its establishment, and within no time it was a fully-fledged town known as Pampoenkraal (Pumpkin Corral).
Later the residents appealed to the then governor of the Cape Colony, Sir Benjamin D’Urban to have the name changed to D’Urban in honour of said governor. It was approved and the name stuck for a few years before being changed again, to Durbanville, to avoid confusion with Durban.
Apart from the bucolic lifestyle, Durbanville has a number of spots which make it attractive to both residents and visitors. The Durbanville Rose Garden for example has over 4000 rose bushes and puts on a spectacular display come springtime. There is a tea room which opens on Sundays from October to May which makes a nice break from a busy life or travel itinerary.
The Durbanville Wine Route is another attraction. Flitting between the 9 wine estates will not only expose you to some of the Western Cape famous wines, but also to beautiful scenery and very probably, some great restaurants.
There are also a number of restored Edwardian residences dotted around the suburbs which will appeal to architecture nuts, while Fisantekraal Airfield is where many recreational pilots learn to fly.
If you are looking for a country life atmosphere combined with easy access to the city, Durbanville is the place for you.
