East London Accommodatie - 7
Trying to decide whether to book accommodation in East London? Just look at the history to help you decide.
At first glance, the small city of East London seems uninteresting, however, a rich history belies this poorly cared for spot on the coast. The city is situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, on the Indian Ocean coastline. The city itself is tucked strategically between two major rivers, namely, the Nahoon River to the North and the Buffalo River to the South. Owing to its situation, the city now holds pride of place as South Africa’s only river port, a detail which may seem superfluous today, but was once vitally important. The port once provided supplies to the army who were based here, fighting against the indigenous Xhosa people for the rich, fertile land surrounding East London. In fact, these men were initially based at Fort Glamorgan, which was built solely to protect the port, and with time East London blossomed around the fort.
As for present-day tourist attractions, East London still holds a few cards. The climate is mild and pleasant all year round, it is surrounded by green undulating hills and the ocean is warm and inviting with top notch surf-able waves. Furthermore, the locals are amongst the friendliest you’ll come across in South Africa. East London is also comparatively cheap and owing to the lack of hotels, you will find that East London accommodation is an intimate Bed and Breakfast or family-run guesthouse.
East London happens to make an excellent stop-over point too given its position on one of the most classic South African road-trip routes. The city is the most Northern point on South Africa’s very own ‘Sunshine Coast’. This stretch of seaside is sunny all year round (as the name implies) and comprises a number of cute and pretty seaside towns and inspiring conservation areas such as the Tsitsikama Marine Reserve and Addo Elephant National Park.
East London is also the gateway to the rural Eastern Cape and home to the Xhosa tribe. It is a region where one notices the traditional reed and mud huts painted in their distinctive Xhosa patterns. Historically speaking, this area is very significant given its Bantustan status in the Apartheid days – evidence of which can still be observed in the crowded cities and pot-holed roads.
If you are keen on genuine hospitality, are planning a road trip, have an interest in South Africa’s history or all of the above, booking accommodation in East London is an absolute must.

Gonubie
My son stays in Gonubie and he never had any problems to date. The area where is stays is quiet, clean and have enough activities to keep him busy. That is what we also come across the times that we visited Gonubie. Gonubie is a place to be away from City life.

East London (Central)
The Berea-vincent area where Fusion House is located, and where we spent most of our time, is a lovely quaint suburb, very safe and clean and away from the hustle and bustle of the main city centre. East London main city centre however is in dire need of a good solid physical clean-up and overall refurbishment of roads and buildings.
