Edenvale Verblyf - 3

Edenvale lies on the East Rand of Gauteng. The East Rand refers to a north-south stretch of land on the eastern side of the Witwatersrand where a gold reef was discovered in the early 1900’s. This stretch of land was the initial impetus for the development of Johannesburg (the west of the East Rand). A number of towns on the east Rand, such as Bedfordview and Springs, were once considered independent, but as Johannesburg, South Africa’s economic powerhouse expanded, so these towns were incorporated into the municipality of greater Johannesburg. Edenvale shares this story.

Modern-day Edenvale started out life in 1903 under the name, Rietfontein. It was so named after the Rietfontein Gold Mine, around which the town was developed. It was only declared a municipality in 1942 and its independence did not last very long. In 1995, a year after South Africa’s first democratic elections, the Gauteng region was reorganised and Edenvale was amalgamated with Johannesburg and the other East Rand towns.

Today Edenvale is a pleasant area with a mixture of middle and upper income areas. It is home to a number of Italian and Portuguese immigrants as well as fellow Africans from places like Zimbabwe and Malawi. It is a popular place for Johannesburg residents to live because of its proximity to pertinent parts of Johannesburg. It is attractive for visitors too as it is easy to get around from Edenvale but is not as expensive as staying in places nearer the centre.

Edenvale is halfway between OR Tambo International Airport and Johannesburg Central and is only 12 kilometres from Sandton – the hotspot for Johannesburg’s shopping, business and restaurants scenes.
