Hazyview Verblyf - 5
This small Mpumalanga town is named for the haze which settles over the sleepy town in the mornings. Set in a farming region famed for its bananas, Hazyview itself is nice enough. Its draw card though, is its location. The options for accommodation in the area include backpackers and self catering accommodation to cosy country cottages. Staying in Hazyview will give you convenient access to not one, but two of South Africa’s most sought-after attractions.
To the East of the town lies the iconic Kruger National Park which, in case you haven’t heard, is South Africa’s premiere game-viewing destination. Home to the Big 5, among myriad other species, big, small, feathered, scaled and mammalian, the park is also pivotal in the overlapping worlds of conservation and academia. It can be reached quickly by rental-car from Hazyview for a self-drive safari, and there are also a couple of establishments in and around town which offer tours to Kruger.
The second, but by no means less impressive attraction nearby is the Blyde River Canyon. This canyon is ranked up there with the big guns like the Grand Canyon in the U.S. and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. The canyon itself is home to an incredible amount of bio-diversity including rare plants, birds and other animals. Exploring the canyon yields extraordinary vistas, strange and intriguing rock formations and a number of awe-inspiring waterfalls.
Within the canyon there are various activities to partake in, from hiking and white-water rafting to microlite flights and scenic drives around the rim of the canyon, all of which reward one with spectacular scenery.
Furthermore, the area in which Hazyview is set is very scenic with many beautiful drives to be taken, and at the end of the day you can return to your comfortable game lodge for a good night’s sleep in preparation for another day’s awesome sight-seeing.

Hazyview
Hazyview has grown tremendously since I was last there. The convenience of a huge shopping mall must be balanced by the loss of the small town atmosphere.
