Kalk Bay Verblyf
Kalk Bay began life as a small
fishing village located on the coast of
False Bay. Over the years, as
Cape Town expanded, Kalk Bay was absorbed and is now a suburb of the greater Cape Town Municipality. Kalk Bay or ‘Kalk Baai’ is derived from the Dutch language, meaning
“Lime Bay”. The name derives from the
large deposits of mussel shells found in the area, which were burnt by early settlers to make
lime for construction. Today, visitors and residents can find
original lime kilns and
roasted mussel shells along the coast.
Kalk Bay operates as a
lively working harbour, and is one of the most
popular tourist destinations along the sea board. Take a visit out to Kalk Bay and you’ll
find the Main Road brimming with
boutique shops, antique stores, coffee shops, restaurants and art galleries.
While being in the vicinity of a fishing village, it is
pertinent you try out the
local cuisine. If you’re looking for
ocean-fresh seafood, the harbour is one of the
best places to get your supplies from – with local fisherman offering up
‘straight off the boat’ fish. Alternatively, head to Kalkys for some deliciously
fried hake and chips. Adjacent to the harbour is
The Brass Bell – a
favourite hotspot for locals. The views at the eatery are unparalleled with the ocean right on their doorstep; while the menu offers
up good quality dishes.
Kalk Bay is an
outdoor hub of action boasting some of the
best reefs in Cape Town for surfers, and is also a popular fishing spot for locals. If you’re more of a

taste for adventure, explore Kalk Bay’s
many interesting caves. A popular spot for whale-watching, tourists flock to Kalk Bay between the months of
May and October, and view the
Southern Right Whale gracing our shorelines.
