Kempton Park is a community located on Gauteng’s East Rand. It is north east of Johannesburg and south of Pretoria. The area’s economy is sustained by various industries but the main player is the OR Tambo International Airport, Africa’s busiest airport. It is also touted as a major convenience and no-one can deny its economic contribution to the area.

Kempton Park’s history follows a similar thread to many of South Africa’s towns and cities. It started with one man, Karl Wolff (of Bavarian descent,) who came to South Africa in the 1900’s to work. He acquired a farm named Zuurfontein which he subdivided after the beginning of the East Rand gold rush. The individual residential stands formed a little village, which Wolff named ‘Kempten’, after his birthplace. As the gold mining industry developed, so did Kempten, whose name was gradually anglicised to ‘Kempton Park’.

These days Kempton Park is lauded for its great transport links and its proximity to Johannesburg, the country’s commercial capital, and Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital. As you can imagine, it is a great place to base yourself if you have business to do across the province.

Some well-known spots in Kempton Park include the Esselenpark Centre of Excellence (a well-equipped conference centre) and the Serengeti Golf Estate, said to be one of Gauteng’s finest. It is also home to the Kempton Park Golf Club and Thembisa, South Africa’s biggest township is located nearby.
