Limpopo Verblyf - 32
Geographically, Limpopo’s claim to fame is that it is the northern-most province of South Africa. It shares borders with 3 other South African provinces and is often referred to as the Gateway to Africa for having access points to Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Many people visit the province in order to take advantage of the great eco-tourism that it offers. The game reserves in the region are one of the main reasons why people book Limpopo accommodation.
Limpopo is classified as savannah biome, comprising mixed grassland and trees. This is the typical landscape one envisions when imagining Africa and its wildlife. Coincidentally, Limpopo is home to a number of well-known game reserves. Most famously, the northern section of the Kruger National Park is found in the province. The Kruger park is South Africa’s largest and most famed reserve, offering visitors the opportunity to spot the Big 5 as well as myriad other plant and animal species.
Other big reserves include Marakele and Mapungubwe National Parks. The Mapungubwe reserve is named after the Mapungubwe region of Limpopo, home of the Mapungubwe settlement, South Africa’s oldest Kingdom. Mapungubwe is one of South Africa’s 8 World Heritage sites and another good reason to book accommodation in Limpopo.
Other attractions in Limpopo include Bela-Bela hot springs and the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve (a UNESCO reserve).
While tourism is one tier of Limpopo’s economy, the province also draws income from a healthy mining industry (which produces platinum products, iron ore, diamonds and copper among other things) and agribusiness. The region around Tzaneen is one of South Africa’s only coffee growing regions and also produces tea. Furthermore, the province’s tropical climate makes it a hub for fruit cultivation with litchis, pineapple and mangoes being among the produce.
Limpopo is named after the Limpopo River which winds its way in the North. The capital of the province is Polokwane.
If you are interested in discovering some of South Africa’s most significant cultural heritage and/or seeing some of Africa’s wildlife with your own eyes, consider visiting Limpopo.
