Melkbosstrand, which means ‘Milkbush Beach’ in Afrikaans, is a coastal town situated on the Cape’s West Coast, a mere 25km drive from the thriving city hub of Cape Town.
Melkbosstrand, commonly referred to ‘Melkbos’ by the locals, is named after the Milkbush or ‘Euphorbiaceae’ bushes which grow plentiful alongside the beaches dunes. The milky-like substance that oozes from the milk bush is medicinal and is used to treat several ailments – from whooping coughs to asthma and rheumatism. The Melkbosstrand beach, which is a 7km stretch of white sand, sees many a holiday maker or local enjoy long afternoon strolls along its perimeter. Beach-goers can enjoy a hubbub of exciting activities like kite surfing, crayfishing, boating and windsurfing. Alternately, venture down to the beach at sunset and enjoy a sundowner, while feasting your eyes on the wraparound views of Robben Island and Table Mountain.
If you enjoy seafood cuisine, Melkbosstrand is for you, with many of its restaurants offering up a variety of local dishes. A firm favourite among the locals is the eatery Die Damhuis, a national monument converted into the beachfront restaurant it is today. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy their specialty oysters with views of the mountain and ocean. Following a fully- satisfying meal, settle in for the night at a one of the many Bed and Breakfasts, Guest Houses or self-accommodating flats.
Visitors can travel further afield to view the picturesque Durbanville Winelands and the sprawling Boland Mountains. If you’re a self-proclaimed nature lover, amble through the Koeberg Nature Reserve, where scenery includes a mixed bag of cliffs, sand, dunes and beach.
