Mozambique Verblyf - 5

Mozambique is a long, narrow country to the north of South Africa, and is South Africa’s most eastern neighbour. The country borders the provinces of KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. It is an extremely popular destination for South African holiday-makers in particular, thanks to its close proximity and wealth of natural resources- from game reserves to dive spots.

Some of the most touristed and easy-to-get-to destinations within the country lie on the coast in the southern part of Mozambique. Anyone who has done any research into a Mozambican holiday will no doubt be familiar with places such as Inhambane, Ponta d’Ouro, Vilanculos and Tofo – all stunning beach locations boasting paradise-like settings of soft white sand, lined with coconut trees and azure sea. If you do plan on taking a beach holiday in Mozambique though, bear in mind its tropical climate, with the wet season occuring from October to March.

Although there are plenty of adventures to be had in Mozambique, unless you are prepared to go off-road you will probably spend most of your time in established tourist hang-outs. And with incredible diving and laid-back beach ambience, things could be worse.

The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese, although there are myriad indigenous languages spoken too. If travelling very far north or into the rural areas in the south and centre of the country, you will find less and less Portuguese, let alone English. In the well-populated tourist areas though, many people speak English.

Apart from the beautiful beaches, the culture of Mozambique often enthrals visitors, and markets in towns are often a great place to get a feeling for the country. You will notice the different vegetables, wood carvings and other items on sale, as well as the vibrant material that the people wear.

One final piece of advice, especially if travelling along the coast: eat the seafood. It is fresh and delicious and often comes with the token spicy Mozambican sauce.

Quadbikes definitely a problem in the main roads. I love the boat trip and the fresh bread and roll.
