Phalaborwa is a mining town in the Mopani district of Limpopo, South Africa’s northern-most province. It lies near the confluence of the Ga- Selati and Olifants rivers, halfway up the western boundary of the Kruger National Park. It’s proximity to this iconic South African game reserve is probably Phalaborwa’s proudest claim to fame, although it has others too.
The history of the Phalaborwa area is very interesting as it pertains to traditional South African tribes – an aspect of South African culture often forgotten about by city folk. The area was named Ba-Phalaborwa by a group of Sotho tribes who moved there from further south, and the name means ‘better than the south’. It’s said that these tribes mined and smelted copper and iron as early as 400AD. Just outside Phalaborwa you’ll find Masorini, a replicated Sotho hill village complete with huts, grain storage and smelting huts.
Mining is still practised in Phalaborwa today, and the large open-pit mine is run by the Phalaborwa Mining Company. The mine, which is a giant 2000 metre-wide hole in the ground is Africa’s largest man-made hole. As you might imagine it’s not the prettiest site when you get up close to it, but it is a small price to pay for the incredible setting you get.
Phalaborwa literally borders the Kruger National Park and is further surrounded by a number of private game reserves, given anyone who visits a buffet of game-viewing options to choose from. In addition, the town is an easy drive from attractions like the Blyde River Canyon and its look out points like Bourke’s Luck and God’s Window, and the iconic fruit growing region of Tzaneen is an easy drive away too.
