Randburg is a large area of Johannesburg, situated in the North West part of the city, which incorporates numerous Joburg suburbs, and offers the visitor many intriguing attractions to discover, ample opportunity for retail therapy and a selection of lovely hotels to stay in – all in a pleasant environment.
Randburg, like many of the metropolitan areas in Johannesburg, was originally declared an independent town. An amalgamation of no fewer than 32 suburbs, the name was chosen as the result of a competition among residents and everything was made official in 1959 when Randburg was officially founded. In the 1990’s however, after the fall of apartheid, it was absorbed into the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.
Being situated on the Highveld Plateau as it is, Randburg (and greater Johannesburg) experience a subtropical highland climate which consists of hot days, afternoon thundershowers and cool evenings in summer and dry, sunny days and icy nights in winter.
Despite being so inextricably linked to Johannesburg, Randburg and its suburbs have their own characters. Some of the suburbs which fall into the Randburg region include, North Riding, Randpark Ridge, Ferndale and Blairgowrie. These are friendly suburbs with sunny dispositions where visitors will feel at home.
Among Randburg’s attractions is the South African National Museum of Military History, which, as the name suggests, documents the battles that the South African Military has been involved in as well as various artillery and equipment used.
The numerous shopping centres found in Randburg make the area known as an entertainment hub. Some malls often mentioned include Cresta Shopping Centre, Brightwater Commons and Northgate.
