Sabie Verblyf - 2

Sabie is a picturesque forestry town in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It is conveniently located less than 400 kilometres from Johannesburg and is only 64 kilometres from the famous Kruger National Park. With a gorgeous setting and good proximity to local attractions and larger cities, it is no surprise that Sabie’s tourism industry is well-developed too. There are numerous Sabie accommodation options to choose from as well a host of restaurants and endless attractions and activities to keep visitors entertained.

The name Sabie comes from the Tsonga word Ulusaba, the original name of the Sabie River, after which the town is named. Ulusaba means ‘fearful’, a fitting name as the river was historically home to scary Nile crocodiles that, as a result of extensive hunting, are no longer found there. The Sabie River is still a focal point for the town though, despite the lack of crocs, and many of the river’s spectacular waterfalls such as Sabie Falls within the town and Lone Creek Falls just outside it, are notable tourist attractions. Apart from the falls, there are over 20 natural heritage sites dotted about the countryside within an hour of Sabie.

Sabie is located on the escarpment of the Drakensberg Mountain Range at 1000 metres above sea level. It experiences a reasonably mild climate with summer rainfall. The surrounding landscape consists of rocky hillsides, pockets of afromontane forest, mountain grassland and one of the largest man-made forests in the world – the pine forests which exist to fuel the forestry trade. As you might imagine, this offers a world of opportunities to outdoor enthusiasts, from short walks and multiple-day treks to rock climbing, abseiling, horse-riding and fly-fishing. The single tracks found on the forest slopes are especially attractive to mountain bikers and plant fiends and bird-watchers will be more than content with the range of species found in and around Sabie.

Sabie accommodation comes in all shapes and sizes and a day or two spent in this gorgeous little town has the potential to add a whole new dimension to a trip to Kruger National Park.
