Sandton is an umbrella term which refers to a group of suburbs in northern Johannesburg. The name is derived from the names of two of the suburbs; Sandown and Bryanston, although it’s not only these two which are incorporated in the Sandton area.

Sandton is well known as not only South Africa’s most significant financial and commercial zone, but one of the wealthiest square miles on the African continent. Perhaps the most mind-boggling fact is that it has achieved this status in less than 50 years. Half a century ago, the entire area was a rural zone of small holdings, horse trails and greenbelts. Today it couldn’t be more typical of a flashy developed city if it tried.

The part referred to as Sandton Central refers to a compact area where you’ll find the Sandton City Shopping Centre and the Sandton Convention Centre. The mall is the largest in Southern Africa and is home to numerous upmarket retail outlets, restaurants and other services. Adjacent to it is Nelson Mandela Square, which boasts a 6 metre tall statue of Madiba himself as well as a trendy selection of indoor/outdoor restaurants. The convention centre is a slick, modern building highly sought after for high profile events. It offers exceptional service to its clients and is a superbly equipped venue.

Sandton is also brimming with classy hotels and upmarket, comfortable guesthouses and bed and breakfasts. It caters to all manner of travellers from businessmen to tourists and offers a number of iconic attractions, such as a township tour of the surprisingly near Alexandra township.
