This small town is situated roughly 50 kilometres from Cape Town and makes a great base for exploring the greater Western Cape area. The town’s many guesthouses and bed 'n breakfasts ( as opposed to hotels, though there are those too) somehow suits the relaxed, small-town energy of the place.
Somerset West is named, as many of South Africa’s towns are, after one of the early British colonialists, Governor Charles Henry Somerset. Its name was later adapted to distinguish it from another town in South Africa of the same name. It rests in the foothills of the Helderberg Mountain range and is the main business centre for the small Helderberg region. Given its proximity to Cape Town though, it falls under the Cape Town Municipality. This proximity to amenities is one of the reasons that Somerset West is a great place to base oneself.
Cape Town, with all its attractions – the Bo-Kaap, Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch, among others - is a 40 minute drive away, and the Helderberg Wine Route is right on the doorstep. In fact, Vergelegen, South Africa’s oldest wine farm, is situated in Somerset West itself and Lourensford Wine Estate is just outside.
Somerset West also has some spectacular golf courses The Helderberg Nature Reserve makes for a good picnic spot amongst the birds, tortoises and buck. For the more adventurous there are a number of hiking trails in the surrounding mountains and Bikini Beach is just 10 kilometres away. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Stellenbosch is a lovely foodie town for those who prefer to bumble around chocolate-tasting and taking in the pretty architecture.
The bottom line is that holidaying in Somerset West suits those who want access to the action but who don’t want to be in the centre of it all the time. It’s a pretty town surrounded by beautiful scenery, which will make a good base for a couple of days.
