Stanford is a unique little village that is neighboured by the towns of Hermanus and De Kelders. It is known for its peaceful setting and unchanging atmosphere, having undergone little modernisation since its inception as a farm in 1857. 

The tree-lined streets of Stanford are steeped in culture and history, with buildings and monuments dating back over 200 years. The village is home to an original farmhouse built in 1785, said to be the oldest homestead in the Cape Overberg. While there are no records in existence, the nondescript church found at the town’s heart is said to have been developed in the early 1700’s.

Stanford visitors looking to experience these historic buildings first hand can enjoy a stay in one at one of the quaint self-catering establishments in the area – some of which boast a rustic, old-world charm.

If you happen to be in the town on a Saturday morning, make your way to the market square for the festive, weekly markets. Here you’ll be able to buy artisanal products and a miscellany of market wares from the local vendors. Apart from the market, the venue hosts the annual Welsh Pony Show.

Holidaymakers are encouraged to visit the Klein River Cheese Shop. Not only will you be able to purchase and sample blue, camembert and other much-loved cheeses, but also a couple of Gruyere varietals. A point of interest to cheese-lovers is that the Klein River Cheese Shop is one of the few places in South Africa where Gruyere is made. Apart from the tastings, on summer days, families enjoy picnic lunches and relax around the majestic Klein River.

Stanford is known for its scenic beauty and unparalleled views, so it’s common to find locals and holidaymakers enjoying cruises up the river or slow meanders around the town and surrounding areas. If you’re a seasoned walker, there are plenty of trails that will give you a bit of exercise and immerse you in nature. The Salmonsdam Mountain Trail, situated in the Salmonsdam Nature Reserve, is an easy, circular route that is 4 km’s long and will take you approximately two hours to complete.
