Surrounded on three sides by the Namib Desert and on one side by the cold, Atlantic Ocean, the Namibian city of Swakopmund might seem rather uninviting. However this harsh desert scenery is very moving and may be just what you need to get out of your ‘normal life’ head space.
Swakopmund, lies on the coast, near the mouth of the Swakop River in north western Namibia. The name ‘Swakopmund’ is in fact German for Swakop mouth, another descriptive place name. The small city lies roughly 280 kilometres to the west of Namibia’s capital, Windhoek and despite appearing barren to the unaccustomed eye, is bursting with activities to keep you occupied.
It was established in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa (as Namibia was known then), deemed suitable in part because of the available fresh water supply provided by the Swakop River. This history explains the city’s decidedly German colonial architecture, which can give one the feeling that you have stepped back in time. Despite appearances though, Swakopmund, is a member of the 21st century, and you will find all the necessary amenities that you could possibly want there.
Within the city itself are a number of attractions which may be worth your while to visit, among them the Swakopmund Museum, the National Marine Aquarium and a crystal gallery. Just outside of town are sand dunes which will have you reaching for your camera and the Rossmund Desert Golf Course, one of only five all-grass desert golf courses in the world.
In the desert landscapes surrounding the city you can also have the opportunity to take to the endless skies in a hot air balloon or sky dive from a light aircraft. For those preferring solid ground beneath their feet, quad biking or horse-riding might be more your cup of tea.
