Swellendam Accommodatie - 5
Picture a slow country lifestyle where neighbours wave and chat to each other, a place where beautiful historical old buildings rest on a backdrop of fields in varying shades of green and a moody mountain range watches over the scene. If you can imagine such a scene you have a good idea of what Swellendam is like.
This small town is renowned for its youngberries, an industry which has given rise to a number of berry-related products and activities in the area. Apart from the obvious harvesting of the berries themselves, many farm stalls in the area sell berry liqueurs, jams and relishes, and some farms offer berry picking in season and much of Swellendam accommodation is located on the surrounding farms.
As with many small towns, Swellendam has its fair share of eccentric characters, some of whom have come up with eccentric tourist activities. One such place is the Sulina Fairy Sanctuary, where visitors can enter the Sulins’ garden for a small fee and tour the fairy world which Mrs Sulin has created.
Historically speaking, Swellendam was founded back in 1745, making it the 3rd oldest settlement in South Africa. The Drostdy Museum pays homage to Swellendam’s history and the group of beautiful historical buildings are traditionally furnished with antique pieces from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Aside from bumbling around town, window shopping at the little boutiques and enjoying coffee and cake in the coffee shops, the surrounding areas offer many activities for the nature lover in you. A few minutes’ drive from the centre of town is the Bontebok National Park, a small reserve home to a host of buck species and zebras. The Breede River is nearby too, which makes for a lovely stroll or fishing outing. There are of course also mountains to be climbed and mountain biking can also be arranged.
Swellendam accommodation tends to be either in a small B ‘n B in town or on a guest farm just outside. Either way, Swellendam is a great place to escape for a few days be it for a romantic getaway or fun break with the family.

Swellendam
As a South Afican who has frequented Swellendam often, one still does not realise how much Swellendam has to offer.
Favourite Highlights this time:
* Cheese Shop in The Hermitage Valley - A Cheese Tasting with Susan Matthewman. Amazing Cheese Toasties with the local cheese.
* Honey Shop near the Museums
* The Hermitage Valley itself is definately 1 of my favourite, with beautiful Fold Mountains.
* The Old Mill Restaurant - Incredible Ice Creams! - Nicky's Famous Belgian Recipe. Amazing Breakfasts and fabulous wedding venue.
* In close proximity to places like Bonnivale, Robertson or Zuurbraak. Wine tasting just down the road.
* Still love strolling down the road with all the Old Monument Buildings - In another time zone ...
