Tzaneen Unterkünfte - 2
Tzaneen is the second largest town in the Limpopo province, after the capital, Polokwane. The town itself has a population just over under 7000, but if the surrounding farming communities are to be included in the statistics, the area’s population rises to around 30 000. Tzaneen has a sub-tropical climate and is surrounded by fruit farms and pine plantations. It is also close to some of Limpopo’s best game reserves, making Tzaneen a desirable place for those setting off on an Africansafari.
Tzaneen is situated just over 400 kilometres from Johannesburg and is only 100 kilometres from South Africa’s largest game reserve, the Kruger National Park. This being the case, Tzaneen fares well when it comes to tourism, but agriculture also plays a large role in its economy. The warm summers (averaging around 28°C) and mild winters provide the perfect climate fruit-growing, including mangoes, bananas and avocado pears, while large pine and eucalyptus plantations are also prominent in the area.
Attractions in and around Tzaneen include the granddaddy Kruger Park, and the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve. This reserve is home to sable and giraffe (the breeding of which has played an important role in stocking surrounding game reserves), hippos and crocodiles (found in the Letaba River) as well as other antelope. There are numerous enjoyable hiking trails within the reserve too.
One of the most popular tourist attractions in the area is the Muti Wa Vatsonga Living Museum, a small village which portrays the lives of traditional Tsonga tribes. It is located in the north of the Hans Merensky reserve.
The Magoebaskloof, with its lush forested surroundings is round the corner, so to speak, from Tzaneen and the Cheerio Gardens are a favourite tourist attraction. This garden is home to a number of deciduous northern hemisphere trees such as maples and cherry trees, which blossom in Spring (September to October), providing a colourful spectacular for visitors.
Accommodation in Tzaneen is wide ranging, including anything from bed & breakfasts and self-catering cottages to guesthouses and hotels. It is a pretty area and the scenery will certainly relax you!
