Calitzdorp Winter Festival 2018 - 2
The Calitzdorp Winter Festival, formerly known at the Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival, is a celebration of the town's rich cultural heritage. Each year, visitors from all over South Africa flock to Calitzdorp for a weekend-long event of family fun, food, and of course, a whole lot of port-drinking.
In previous years, the event has largely focussed on Calitzsdorp's title as the port capital of South Africa, giving enthusiasts the opportunity to a selection of fine varietals. However, a decision was made by the organisers to diversify the event by promoting the town as an exciting tourist destination. With plenty to see and do in the Klein Karoo town, Calitzdorp makes for a perfect weekend escape of wine, food, culture and warm hospitality.
Festival-goers can expect a jam-packed programme of family-friendly adventures, fine dining, live entertainment and port sampling. The weekend starts off with an 'Amazing Race' competition, which shall see teams of two racing around the town, solving puzzles and completing tasks. Movie-lovers can enjoy a night under the stars with an outdoor screening of classic films and blockbusters. Individuals who are looking to indulge on gourmet cuisine and fine wines can spend an evening at one of the local cellars.
Throughout the event, festival-goers can look forward to live music by the local talent, and peruse the stalls selling eclectic market wares. For the hungry and thirsty, there is a beer tent and numerous food stalls offering street-styled grub. If you've got children, bring them along as there are plenty of activities bound to keep them entertained for hours, including abseiling and rock climb for the wild at heart.
If you're a lover of classical music, don't miss out on the regional choirs performances taking place at the NG Church in the heart of Calitzdorp. Revellers can enjoy a night of merriment at the Town Street Party.
