International Day of Yoga - 19

SA's International Day of Yoga brings free online yoga classes to a nation in need of an upgrade of their physical and mental well-being!

The longest day of the year, June 21st, is International Day of Yoga 2021, and South African organisers are once again celebrating the gift of yoga, to give access to yoga to anyone and to raise funds for Earthchild Project.

The Earthchild Project is a Non-Profit Organisation, who offers complimentary education to under-resourced schools with a focus on the environment, health and self-development. Their approach to education is holistic, focused on health and wellness, life skills and the environment through different programmes integrated with the schools curriculum. This is done mainly through yoga and meditation, and organic gardening and environmental education.

This year,  will be offering 14 online classes taught by excellent teachers from around the world that will be shared live for anyone to join at no cost. In the spirit of giving back, we encourage participants to contribute towards Earthchild Project where just R250 provides one child in Khayelitsha or Lavender Hill with weekly yoga and mindfulness lessons for an entire year!  Any donation for Earthchild Project is very much appreciated, and enters you into a raffle where you have a chance to win awesome yoga prizes.

Yoga is a widely acknowledged as a powerful tool to deal with the stress of uncertainty and isolation, as well as to maintain physical well-being. The World Health Organization mentions yoga as a means to improve health in its global action plan on physical activity for the period 2018 - 2030: more active people for a healthier world. In addition, UNICEF notes that children can practice many yoga poses without any risk and get the same benefits that adults do.

This year’s International Yoga Day theme is “Yoga at home and Yoga with family” respecting social distancing measures imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic while also acknowledging the need for mental, physical, spiritual and emotional wellbeing. In addition, the theme links to the dramatic shift in how the fitness and wellbeing industry has had to adapt in the last 15 months. Many have installed home gym equipment, static cycling rigs and home yoga studios, seeing increases for brands like Headspace the meditation app, and Down Dog, Glo and Yoga for Beginners in the app stores.

The idea of an International Day of Yoga was first proposed by the current Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), on 27 September 2014. "Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well-being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

This is the 6th celebration in South Africa and the 2nd online celebration.

The event will take place via Instagram Live @internationaldayofyogasa on the 19th June 2021 from 6am to 8pm.

We hope to see you and your family on your mats!
