Joburg Bierfest 2016 - 2
South Africa's biggest beer festival just got bigger for 2016! Now housed in an authentic 4000 seater Bavarian Brauhaus adorned with décor straight from the Motherland, Bierfest Johannesburg falls on the weekends of 2-4 September at the Silverstar Casino.
The Bierfest, which has grown twofold since its inception, has, not surprisingly, beer as a primary focus. Last year's event showcased the three beers, Munich Dunkel, Krystal Weiss and Royal Bavaria. These brews, which modelled their German equivalents, had their own distinctive flavour and texture.
While beer is certainly important, it is by no means the cental feature of the festival. In fact, if you’re feeling generous, one could go so far as to call it a cultural festival, celebrating all things German or Bavarian related.
The tubthumping tuba, courtesy of the Oompah band, will get you into the spirit of the event. Test your strength and skill against an array of traditional Oktoberfest challenges, including beer pong and 'best dressed' competitions.
Weaving their way between benches and beer-fuelled bodies will be a bevy of waitresses kitted out in Bavarian barmaid outfits, complete with puffy sleeves and bodices. When it comes time to rehydrate and get some food, these lovely ladies will bring you German dishes, which include Deutsch Fleischsalat (meat salad), bratwurst and bockwurst (sausages) and chips, and rotkohl(red cabbage) among other foreign delights.
