Open Streets Mitchells Plain 2018 - 3
On Sunday, 25 March 2018 Eisleben Road in Mitchells Plain will be temporarily declared a car-free zone as part of the Open Streets initiative. This initiative was inspired by Bogota's Ciclovia - a Columbian recreational programme who every Sunday, turns 120kms of city streets into motor-free areas.
With this end point in mind, Open Streets Cape Town comprises of a group of volunteers who are committed to making our streets more equitable and safer for pedestrian use. Individuals are encouraged to participate through whatever means they see fit - think walking, skating, rollerblading or cycling. While effectively 'taking back the city', attendees can connect with others and enjoy the wide-open spaces. Bring along your families - furkids included - and enjoy a day out in Mitchell's Plain.
Those who are wanting to get a bit more involved can email the organisers their innovative ideas on possible activities they might be wanting to host, be it a rowdy soccer match, a poetry session or some yoga.
The day is so much more than an event, but a means to envision our lives, and our streets, differently. Attendees are encouraged to ditch their petrol guzzlers and get to Mitchells Plain on public transport - whether it be in a taxi or on the My City Busses. If you're a stranger to public transport, this is a good way to see how thousands travel around the Mother City on a daily basis.
