Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly - 3

For the first time, a collective of artists in Fish Hoek and Clovelly open their studios this October

The inaugural edition of Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly (OSFHC) will take place over the weekend of 3-5 October 2025, featuring 18 artists in 13 studio sites across four different routes. This is a chance to make connections, meet artists in person, explore the area and see some inspiring work, from paintings to ceramics to sculpture, papermaking to illustration, stitching and more.

‘We have long admired other Deep South Open Studios, such as those in Noordhoek and Kommetjie, and we realised it was time to crank up the volume in our neck of the woods too, to show the world the depth and breadth of talent living this side of the peninsula,’ says the organisers. ‘In the past, Fish Hoek and Clovelly had a reputation as a bit of a sleepy hollow, a former dry suburb that is more of a retirement village than anything else, but a lot is happening here, and there are incredibly talented artists and makers who live here and who want to open their studios, homes and hearts to everyone to honour all that this area is and all that it can become.’

The event is free, and guests can visit as many studios and come back as many times as they want from Saturday 4 October to Sunday 5 October. There are four different studio routes to choose from, covering Clovelly, Fish Hoek Valley, Fish Hoek Mountainside and Risi View.

In addition to the free days, there is a ticketed preview day on Friday 3 October for art collectors and enthusiasts who want first dibs on the art on sale. A portion of the ticket sales will go to the Flamingo Project, a non-profit organisation that supports breast cancer surgery for those in need.

The participating artists include established names as well as emerging creatives. Well-known and respected artists include Carol Hofmeyr, founder of the famed Keiskamma Art Project; award-winning ceramicist and originator of the Zulu Goth style Sandile Cele; Liz Vels, who has work in the Wits Art Museum; award-winning multidisciplinary artist Marlise Keith, whose works can be found in a number of international collections; Sue Kaplan, whose work is also held in a number of private collections both locally and internationally; textile artist Yda Walt; and photographer Jenny Gordon.

Other participating creatives include painters Lauren Shantall, Evan Oberholster and Sheree Harrison, paper artists Kyoko Kimura Morgan and Cathy Stanley, textile artists and designers Susan Didcott of Trip, and Emma and Leila Rowett of Threads That Bind Us, and illustrator Gerda O’Griet (the pen name of Gerda Smit). Artists who work adeptly across several disciplines including art education, are Sasha Scholtz, Sue Kaplan, Jenny Gordon, Liz Vels, Kyoko Kimura Morgan, Carol Hofmeyr and Evan Oberholster.

The organisers have created a collectible bespoke route map designed and illustrated by Kyoko Kimura Morgan and printed by the area’s own Zip Print. The maps are available at Zip Print and the Playhouse, which is on the Kommetjie road, with the latter being a great spot to stop for a quick coffee. The map is also available online as a digital version via the About Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly 2025 page, which also shares detail and images of all the artists on show. Please follow the OSFHC Instagram feed - @openstudiosfishhoekclovelly – for the latest updates and visuals of the artists’ work.

The organisers suggest using uber or private transport to travel between the various routes and studios, as in many cases the distance is too great to walk (except for Clovelly). Because many of the studios are located in private residences, regrettably not all of them offer wheelchair access, but many do (please enquire ahead of time via DM to @openstudiosfishhoekclovelly if this is a concern). The event is open to anyone with an interest in the arts.
