Spier Poetry Festival 2016 - 23

The Spier Poetry Festival, otherwise known as the 'Dancing in other words' project, is a unique, internationally renowned poetry event that runs from 7 May 2016 at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch.

Spier Wine Farm, one of South Africa's oldest wineries, is the ideal location to get one's creativity flowing - with a glass of wine in hand whilst being surrounded by scenic vistas.

Those who have a love affair with the written word are invited to this highly anticipated festival. Here, participants aim to uncover and explore poetry's age-old function as being “the dreaming vein in the body of society”. The jam-packed programme includes afternoon conversations and masterclasses as well as evening readings and musical performances. For those who are looking to mix food and poetry together, there is a poetry-inspired dinner in which interested parties can attend. If you're looking to partake in the night festivities, there will be an evening of dancing to look forward to as well.

The Spier Poetry Festival, which is now its third year of running, was the brainchild of the renowned curator, Breyten Breytenbach. The aims of the festival are to bring together an eclectic mix of poets, philosophers, minstrels and musicians, creating a platform in which to have discussions about the heritage of African arts and literature, means of protecting its legacy and ways in which to build on its future.

Apart from locally renowned literary voices, there will also be appearances by a string of international guests; including the likes of Dominique Botha, Neo Muyanga, Michel Deguy (France), Maram al-Massri (Syria), Efe Paul Azino (Nigeria), Yvette Christiansë (Australia) and Hans ten Berge (Holland).

So if you an obsession with literature and are looking to be apart of in-depth discussions with acclaimed literary greats, don't miss out on the Spier Poetry Festival.

Tickets to the event are available online, participating in conversations and conversations with acclaimed poets is free while attending poetry readings are R220 per head.
