StreetSmart SA Fundraiser: Screenings of ‘Pilgrimage’ Films - 3

Special Screenings of two films about the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage will take place at Cape Town’s Labia Theatre in May - all in an effort to generate much needed funds for the work of StreetSmart SA.

The highly acclaimed films, Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago and The Way, will be shown on 4 May and 5 May respectively.

Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago

Date and Time: 4 May 2019 at 13:45

Prepare to be inspired by the real life events of Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago. This account follows various pilgrims, aged three to 73, as they attempt to cross an entire country on foot - with only a backpack, a pair of boots and an open mind. Driven by an inexplicable calling and a grand sense of adventure, each pilgrim throws themselves heart and soul into their physical trek to Santiago de Compostela, and most importantly, their personal journey into themselves. Whatever their motivation, no one can predict just how their paths will unfold, what personal demons or angels they will face, or what transformations they will undergo by the trail's end.

The Way

Date and Time: 5 May 2019 at 16:00

Dubbed a "brilliant documentary" by actor Martin Sheen, this multiple award-winning 2013 film has been sold out screenings worldwide. The Spanish drama film, The Way, is a powerful story about family, friends, and the challenges we face while navigating this ever changing and complicated world.

Directed, produced and written by Emilio Estevez and starring Martin Sheen, Deborah Kara Unger, James Nesbitt, Yorick van Wageningen, and Renée Estevez, this film honours the Camino de Santiago and promotes the traditional pilgrimage.

The "pro-people, pro-life, not anti-anything" film,  as described by Estevez, is a thought-provoking and poignant story of Thomas Avery (Martin Sheen), an American ophthalmologist who goes to France following the death of his adult son, Daniel (Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees during a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, a Catholic pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Tom's purpose is initially to retrieve his son's body. However, in a combination of grief and homage to his son, Tom decides to walk the ancient spiritual trail where his son died, taking Daniel's ashes with him.

Since 2011, Cape Town’s Labia Theatre, the oldest independent art-repertory movie cinema in South Africa, has screened movies about the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage to raise funds for StreetSmart SA.

This event happens annually and StreetSmart SA is ever so grateful for the continued relationship with the Labia Theatre, its owner Ludi Kraus and his phenomenal team.
