Zolani Mahola Rok en Rol - 8
Zolani Mahola is one of South Africa's most beloved and successful female stars. She is best known as the lead singer for Freshlyground. In the production Rok & Rol she sets out to honor the role and influence of women in the world of rock & roll. She will be on stage with a team of world-class musicians in this inspiring and moving journey to tell the story of how women made their stand in this initially male-dominated industry.
Mahola says that she is excited about this show. "I’ve always loved music. This show is a tribute to women who have turned the music industry on its head by the sheer weight of their gorgeous talent. I’m going all the way from the sophisticated Etta James to live wires like Janis Joplin to the mellifluous sounds of Fleetwood Mac to rebel powerhouses like the young Miriam Makeba all the way to the megastar Beyoncé. I’m honoring women whose music and whose voices have shaken up the status quo and who have by their very existence made this world a more exciting place. These women are a strong part of my musical lineage; I am their descendant and heir. I’m so excited to present this incredible show at the end of this year which has seen the continuation of the Me-too movement which, far from presenting women as victims, has for me been about women asserting their voice as we have had to continuously do throughout the decades. It is this rebel voice that I explore in my show Rok & Rol and I`m certain it will delight and surprise the audience on the 29th December.”
Musical director of and bassist in the show, Schalk Joubert and Mahola have a long history in working together. Joubert says: “Zolani is a rare talent that ranks right up there with some of the best singers and performers our country ever produced. We first worked together when we co-wrote and recorded a song called Khala on my debut album Kayamandi in 2005. Since then we have been part of numerous other productions together. When she mentioned to me that she would like to put a show together featuring the role of women in Rock & Roll music l knew she would do an excellent job of it. She does not only understand the emotions and nuances of the music, but also the complications of womanhood in this male dominated industry. This is going to be a very special evening. Mahola's impressive and diverse singing talent combined with her contagious stage personality will not leave any audience member untouched.”
