Walvis Bay Unterkünfte
Walvis Bay is a small city on the Atlantic coast of Namibia. It lies almost smack in the centre of the coastline. It occupies more or less the same latitude as Windhoek, the country’s capital, just a few hundred kilometres to the west.
Walvis Bay has a long colonial history, being especially popular due to its strategic location on the shipping route which rounds the Cape of Good Hope. It gets its name, which means ‘Whale’ Bay in Afrikaans, not surprisingly, from the abundance of whales which frequent the bay of the same name, upon which the city is situated. The Atlantic Ocean on this stretch of coast is rich in plankton and other marine life, which thus makes it an attractive feeding ground for these giants of the deep. Furthermore, the protected bay is an ideal breeding ground for them.
It is also an ideal place for ships to stop, thanks to its natural, deep-water harbour, protected by the Pelican Point sand spit. The Walvis Bay harbour remains busy to this day, not only with passing international sea traffic, but also due to the major fishing activity.
Fishing and guano (collected from the artificial Bird Island) are two of the city’s driving economic forces, as is tourism. Local and international tourists head over to Walvis Bay to check out the seabird life, the marine wildlife and indulge in some adventure activities on the surrounding dunes. The giant dunes, including the favourite Dune 7, are renowned as a sand boarding and quad biking location.
Walvis Bay has an arid climate with an annual rainfall so low that it is considered one of the driest cities in the world. Despite the lack of cloud cover though, both the cool winters and warm summers are comparatively mild, when considering other destinations in arid climates.
