Welkom Verblyf
Welkom is a relatively small city located in the Free State. You’ll find it 140 kilometres to the north east of Bloemfontein, the capital of the province. Welkom was originally built on a farm called ‘Welkom’, which became the city’s namesake. It was proclaimed a town 1948, and was designed with the goal of being a city of which its occupants could be proud. The town planners achieved this quite well as Welkom is still sometimes known as the ‘city within a garden’, thanks to the landscaped parks – one in each of Welkom’s 14 residential suburbs.
Welkom is also known as the ‘circle city’, thanks to its efficient traffic flow design, which favours traffic circles over traffic lights and stop streets. This is also thanks to forethought of the city’s designers.
Welkom, like so many of South Africa’s interior settlements came about because gold was discovered and to this day mining is a major industry in Welkom. Gold and uranium are the minerals mined here, and Welkom is considered the hub of the Free State gold fields. It also forms part of the ‘Maize Triangle’ and is a producer of steel, lumber and beef.
Welkom is surrounded by a largely flat, dry landscape dominated by two distinct types of grassland. The Sand River is nearby though and there are two pans to the south of the town, and between the 3 features you can spot over 200 bird species, including flamingos, numerous types of bishops and a number of widow birds.
Attractions in Welkom include a number of memorials, a gold museum, the Goldfields Casino Complex, an arts and crafts route and tavern tours of Thabong township.
