Bot River Valley Unterkünfte
The Bot River Valley is a picturesque part of the Western Cape, South Africa, and is located within the lovely Overberg region of the province. It is an extremely fertile valley at the foot of the Hou Hoek Mountains and is brimming with history as well as beautiful flora.
Initially the Bot River was known as the ‘Couga River’, and the entire region was inhabited by the Khoi Khoi people. These herdsmen grazed their cattle on the fertile banks of the river and celebrated the rare water source. Later, European settlers were drawn to the area, in search of butter (or so the story goes). What they found exceeded their interpretations, and they decided to stay. In the process, the river had a name change to Bot, derived from the Afrikaans word for butter, botter.
Today the region is dotted with ancient historically important farms, one of which is now known as Beaumont Wines. Beaumont was originally the Campagnes Drift farm, and is the site of the staging post which attracted many of the settlers. The Campagnes Drift Mill is also worth a visit, if only for its novelty value.
The valley is an up-and-coming wine producing area, and so while the valley relies on agriculture, there is no doubt that tourism in the area is growing. Farms like Paarden Kloof, Beaumont and Barton Vineyards are all worth a visit and many wineries in the area offer cellar tours and tastings.
The Bot River Valley also offers visitors the opportunity of hiking and mountain biking and fishing, all of which provide opportunities for appreciating the fynbos, insects and birds.
