Accommodation in Prince Albert is for those who love food. And walking. And architecture. This small town is located 400km from Cape Town and makes a great stop-over for those road-tripping between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth or Johannesburg. Alternatively, you could make Prince Albert the beginning and end of your trip as it’s a lovely destination in itself.
Situated in the arid Central Karoo, the surrounding landscapes are arid and waterless, unlike the town itself which is an oasis in more ways than one. Resting at the foot of the beautiful Swartberg Pass, the town has water aplenty, as the tree-lined streets attest too. The hearty Karoo hospitality also makes a change from the surrounding desert.
As mentioned above, Prince Albert not only offers a wealth of nature trails and culinary delights, but a healthy collection of distinct Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture, 13 of which have been declared national monuments. There are numerous protected areas in the vicinity too where one can hire a guide and get a tour of the history of the area, or you could take a scenic drive to the near-by ‘dorpies,’ all of which have their own stories to tell. Bird watching in the around Prince Albert is also a rewarding endeavour.
As with many small towns, Prince Albert is a haven for some South Africa’s best artists and many galleries await your arrival. Another thing which is characteristic of many small towns here is the wealth of produce and farming in the area. Prince Albert is known for its sun-ripened figs and apricots, as well as its burgeoning cheese, olives and Karoo lamb industries. There are even a few good wineries popping up making Prince Albert an awesome place to visit on a culinary mini- break.
Mohair is another stable industry in the area, which means if you’re caught out on an icy Karoo-winter’s evening, you can always buy yourself some warmth. Summer on the other hand is all hot days and mild nights, allowing any star-gazing activity to be done at a comfortable temperature.
So, if you’re into cheese, wine, olives and architecture, do yourself a favour and book Prince Albert accommodation. And if you fancy hiking and history, do the same!
