The West Coast of South Africa, a dry, sandy stretch of coastline is one of unparalleled beauty. Choosing West Coast accommodation is thus the first step to making your dreams of a relaxing few days spent on a wild coastline a reality.
The West Coast, while primarily sandy beaches, is also comprised of a number of small fishing villages. An hour from Cape Town is Langebaan, a little town nestled on the edges of the Langebaan lagoon. It is somewhat of a mecca for water sports like kite-surfing and kayaking.
Paternoster is another small town on the coast which has become extremely popular in recent years. Many B ’n B’s and 5 star self-catering cottages have sprung up of late, offering a great base for exploring the beach, buying fresh fish from the fishermen or eating at a beach front restaurant.
Further up the coast lies Lambert’s Bay, a town which survives largely due to the crayfish industry. In celebration of this fact, the town hosts an annual Crayfish Festival complete with live music, a half marathon and the most delicious seafood spread. Just down the road, Eland’s Bay is world renowned as a surfing spot offering up exciting waves.
Booking accommodation on the West Coast can also provide you with insight into an interesting and pertinent aspect of South African culture, as many South Africans make a living from the sea, and as any photographer will tell you, colourful boats, nets and fishing cottages make for great photo opportunities.
The West Coast is also popular with flower enthusiasts as come springtime, the flowers blossom, carpeting the otherwise bland landscape in explosive bursts of colour.
