The Hatchery is an old prawn farm set on the pristine and deserted Amatikulu lagoon just off the freeway.
The Hatchery was a prawn breeding facility on a lagoon overlooking a deserted beach and nature reserve. It makes for a unique destination for any visitor to the North Coast. The facility has been "lightly" renovated - the end result is a unique blend of comfort and rustic cool. The Hatchery is all about chilling out, letting loose, and reconnecting.
We are self catering; bringing your own supplies in is recommended.
Low slung cars can scrape on the road in so leave the beemer at home for this one or take your time on the way in.
The Hatchery is less than an hour from Durban – that means less than a tank of gas there and back - so you'll feel like you've done something completely different and not be shattered by the trip..
We're a brilliant venue for weekend weddings and milestone celebrations and for brainstorming in a completely different environment, also a must not miss stopover on your way to the game reserves or Battlefields. We manage to keep your base cost low - you add the frills you want from one of our service providers, or don't..
We stepped out and put in linen, bedding, towels, and even air-cons and you don’t have to share your public with undesirables. No baths, only en-suites with double showers which are good for washing kids once they've had their full and um – well we'd just rather not say.
The communal kitchen and dining table is kitted for any culinary adventure you may want to try your hand at, and a cool place to hang out in inclement weather. There are plenty of spots which show different aspects of the bush and beach environment right at the Hatchery or if you prefer to explore try Casuarina island or one of the lagoons beaches a stone's throw away.
Its up to you to make them happen ! Here are a couple of ideas for you..
Relax on the lagoon beaches or chill out in the gin tank or tonic pools overlooking the reserve, river, and sea.
Hire a “prawn-feeder" to paddle across the lagoon
Forest trails
Walking along the lagoons beaches
Zulu-blonde beer at the George Hotel in Eshowe.
The Amatikulu Nature reserve
Kite boarding, windsurfing, or paddling
Mountain biking trails
Swimming beach at Zinkwazi complete with Mahogany reef beach bar
Princes Grant or Eshowe hills golf courses are a stones throw away

Beach butlers are available to do anything you don’t want to (even taking the little monsters – oops we mean darlings – off your hands) or if you just get too chilled out to do anything at all it doesn’t matter enjoy!!
BYO Overlander Camp Maximum of 4 cars, total of 16 people Make use of No1 ablutions, about 100m away. There is a communal wood fired hot tub + bath. You need to bring all your camping and cooking equipment etc. There is a braai available. Plug points is available and a water tap. Good to bring your own lights as well as extension cord. Please note that you might share this space with other guests as there is space for 16 people to camp. Child rate is applicable for 2-12 years, 13 years and above will be charged at adult rate. This unit is more suitable for a big family - sleeps a total of 8 persons. It is set back from the front line units with its own private garden. It is basically 2 "sides" adjoined by kitchen in middle with bathroom on either side; one side has larger room with queen and 2 singles, other side has 2 rooms, 1 with queen the other with 2 singles. There is a wood-fired hot tub in the yard.
