A light, white, open-plan space, motel mi pi chi is the ideal little sanctum to retreat to after a day of Johannesburg frenzy.
The motel is the lovechild of Nicky rofail, whose humour and poppy inventiveness give the place its character and charm. She's the generous sprite behind the surprise bowls of Nick naks, liquorice all-sorts and sugus sweeties you will no doubt encounter during your stay.
Luckily the man in her life happens to be architect, Andrew Makin, whose creative wizardry has contributed to watershed projects like the constitutional court and singita lebombo and sweni in the Kruger National Park. I've stayed in hotels around the world because of my work and after the initial thrill wears off, you start to look at what really works beyond the quick kicks, says Andrew, who dreamt up the motel's overall design concept. I figured one of the key things you want from a hotel bedroom is for it to be uncluttered, because you are going to take it over while you're there.
