WELCOME TO THE TRAVELLING TORTOISE
We are a new off-the-grid eco resort situated only 10km from the pretty town of De Rust in the
Western Cape. The resort is set in natural Klein Karoo veldt with stunning views from the decks of our mountain chalets.
The pastoral, green Middelplaas valley is in front, the Red Stone Hills to the right and the inspiring Swartberg behind.
The main chalets are spacious and well equipped. The retro cabin over The Hill takes you back to how life was 50 years ago.
There is a family hike where you will spot small buck, the mongoose, maybe a porcupine, the tortoise and its arch rival the hare.
Bird life is abundant, many hawks and raptors hover over the bush scanning for food.
It can be hot in The Little Karoo - that's why we've got a great pool, sun deck and shaded areas.
There is a camp site on the lower reaches.
So weary traveler, visit us and wind down. Do as the tortoise does – wind down slowly.
There are no water restrictions.
We are pet friendly
The latest additions to our facilities are eco wood- fired hot tubs. They are situated in the bush and private to The Angulate and Hing-back chalets. Perfect for a cold winters night while star gazing with a glass of wine, or a cool splash pool in the hot summer.

This Hobbit style home is the latest addition to The Travelling Tortoise. It is built around the continued rivalry between the Hare and the Tortoise. This earth sheltered burrow, tucked away, private, and almost unseen is fitted out with every comfort you could want. It has a well equipped kitchen, large living space and a bathroom with shower. The double bed is in a corner of the pine walls and poplar trees which hold up the curved reed roof. There is also a sleeper couch, so the burrow will also sleep 2 young leverets. You will be warmed in the winter by its cast- iron fire and cooled in the summer as it is well insulated, deep in the cool earth. The braai is on the sheltered stoep, which has wonderful views of the valley and Red Stone Hills. Altogether something that you have never experienced before, it is quite unique.

This spacious chalet comprises 2 bedrooms, the first bedroom is furnished with a double bed, while the second bedroom has 2 single beds. Both bathrooms are fitted with a shower. The kitchen is well-equipped with a fridge/freezer, gas oven and hob, as well as tea- and coffee- making facilities. The lounge has comfortable seating with a single sleeper couch . Outside, down a few steps, is a hot tub for the private use of the guests. There is a generous deck, with braai facilities, that looks over the valley and in the distance the Redstone hills.

It sits higher on the hillside commanding exceptional view. This 3 bedroom 2 bathroom chalet is aimed at the larger family with a comfortable, spacious lounge, well equipped kitchen There is one bathroom with shower, the otheralso with shower and is ensuite.. This chalet is built in a Hobbit style and it is partly underground and well insulated, so with that and the cat iron fire, it is warm in the winter. The open-plan bedroom is furnished with a double bed that rests under the reed roof supported by white poplar trees, There is a spacious bathroom fitted with a shower. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge-freezer , gas cooker with oven and hob. The unit has braai facilities on the porch.

This is a retro cabin set within the bush. You step back in time - what life was like in The Little Karoo 50 years ago It is secluded with beautiful mountain views all around. You will have privacy and tranquility. This cabin is 400m from the main chalets. The track to it is good but it is quite steep in one place, you need a decent vehicle to reach it.

This is the most enjoyable place I have been too. Well maintained totally with nature, wonderful person Jeff is cant do enough for you. Even though totally off grid, facilities are amazing and always had hot water and wonderful clean well functioning facilities. Absolutely love the place will definitely go back. All those persons out there who want comfort must try a place like this to really feel what life is all about.
