Riebeek Kasteel is a charming, picturesque village in the Riebeek Valley, Western Cape, about 75 km northeast of Cape Town. Known for its historic charm, scenic beauty, and vibrant arts scene, it’s one of South Africa’s oldest towns, believed to have been established in the mid-1600s. The area is famous for its excellent wines and olives. Many wine estates and olive farms are open to visitors, offering tastings and tours. Popular stops include Kloovenburg Wine & Olive Estate and Allesverloren Wine Estate, both renowned for their exceptional products. Riebeek Kasteel has become a hub for artists and creatives. Visitors can explore art galleries, boutique shops, and quirky stores featuring local crafts and artwork. The village boasts a variety of eateries, from farm-to-table bistros to fine dining restaurants. Favourites include The Royal Hotel, with its colonial charm, and Mama Cucina, an Italian-inspired eatery. The town is named after Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch coloniser who established Cape Town in 1652. It is said that he passed through this valley during an expedition in the 1660s. Riebeek Kasteel retains its old-world charm, with heritage buildings and tree-lined streets adding to its appeal.
