At Festina Lente (Latin for “haste slowly”) we believe that the things that we like, that intrigue us and give us joy, are those things that are made over time with care and love. Festina Lente is located in Hurlingham, a suburb which lies between Sandhurst and Parkmore, which form the lower ends of a triangle with the Sandton CBD. Boasting upmarket kudos, the leafy avenues of Hurlingham have large, spectacular properties and fine views like those from Hilltop Street over Sandton. An area of choice for Johannesburg’s elite, it is also a shopping mecca for international visitors as well as South Africa’se influential and trendy. Lying in the heart of Sandton, Hurlingham sits basking in its association with Sandton, the city’s most illustrious corporate address, but also a vibey hive of activity with shopping malls and sidewalk cafés, excellent restaurants and general joie de vivre. This is indeed the place to soak up the Jo’burg atmosphere. Nelson Mandela Square is a popular meeting place and the heart of Sandton’s shopping complexes. It’s lined with open-air eateries and lunch time sees the city’s financial and corporate district turn out in suits for lengthy lunches interjected by intense and unsolicited cell phone banter. Despite the high-end shopping experience it offers, there are also walking tours in Sandton that cover its history in eight languages and take in no less than 29 landmarks. In addition, there is also a bird sanctuary and various art galleries.

Afri-frans, perhaps the most pageantry of Festina Lente’s six units, is a rich blend of classic French style and African chic. A spectacular wall mural of Vladimir Tretchikoff’s Lady from the Orient sets a tone of uncompromising originality like the Russian born artist who came to South Africa in 1946. The opulent jewel colours Tretchikoff learnt to love while also working in the East, are integrated throughout the unit. A saffron yellow bedspread accentuated with pillow prints of Tretchikoff’s Miss Wong and Chinese Girl compel attention. Jungle green, midnight blue, cerise and Bolshevik red make the unit a sensory feast. Soaking the open-plan space in shimmering opulence, is a 19th century French empire chandelier, which hangs like a treasure basket from the roof. French chequered black and white tiles, Festina Lente’s trademark bathroom style, matches the la intrépidité of the entire space. A bathtub, shower, washbasin, a toilette and kitchenette afford the deluxe convenience the exceptional ambiance of this unit promises. Afri-Frans also has a veranda to ponder or converse in the early morning or at dusk. The unit includes a flat-screen television set with DSTV and a fireplace to relax in front.A spacious stand-alone unit exquisitely designed and decorated for the discerning guest/s. Festina Lente has six units on offer and Bonjour is one of our flagships. For those with a proclivity for baroquean beauty, this sumptuous unit with its unmistakable French rococo style will be a treasure. Plush crimsons and wine-reds cover the sash windows and a Louis XIV sofa, the latter stacked with hand embroidered cushions. A curlicued gilded mirror above a stone clad fireplace reflect the golden light of a heavy crystal chandelier and bedside sconces. Paintings reminding of Velázquez and Rubens adorn the walls. A chest of drawers and a writing bureau also add to the 17th century opulence of Bonjour. The bedroom and sitting areas are discreetly separated by a faux wall covered in red damask. The spacious sitting area has a flat-screen television with DSTV which opens out onto a small garden. Opposite the queen sized bed, dressed in quality linen, is an old-world armoire to hang your clothes. The shower has every modern convenience. Bonjour too has a kitchenette, a well-stocked bar fridge, microwave, coffee percolator, electric kettle, toaster and all the other amenities you would expect from such a luxurious space.

Step into the triumph of Festina Lente’s Botanica-unit with its 18th century European conservatory décor style. The first jaw-dropper is a taxidermy mount of a royal blue peacock against a mural of a Thomas Gainsborough’s woodland landscape. A collection of delicate antique birdcages, books on botany and crystal lamps help to create an enchanted space guaranteed to let your imagination escape its own coop and take flight. The bed has an exquisite flower print cover and the wall to wall glass pane arch door is dressed up in tangerine and titian red drapes to ensure absolute privacy. Celebrating nature, Botanica - unlike Festina Lente’s other five units - also has its own secluded, walled garden, where guests can enjoy their breakfast or listen to the birds in the very old trees scattered across the property. The bathroom and all other amenities were designed with the pampering of our guests in mind to make their stay simply unforgettable. The unit also includes a flat-screen television.Rich textures, botanical colours and an opulent atmosphere of romance entice visitors to linger longer in this gorgeous suite. Our inspiration was an 18th century European conservatory. Take rest and relaxation to the next level in this sanctuary.

Festina Lente has no less than six units on offer, one of which is Fin de Jour. Styled in formal French elegance and bathed in hues of gold, vineyard green and noble purple, Fin de Jour is the epitome of je ne sais quoi. Recharge in front of a chattering fireplace “at the end of the day” or sip champagne with an empire style crystal chandelier hanging overhead from the high ceiling rafters, spreading its old-world-shimmer over a beautifully designed open-plan space. The bedroom and sitting areas are discreetly separated by a handcrafted wrought iron trellis, while you can hang your clothes in a French armoire, do last minute preparations for that important business meeting at a bureau and eat at a dining table for two covered in crisp white linen. The unit also has the convenience of a kitchenette, a well-stocked bar fridge and a private shower room and toilette. Surrounded by carefully selected objects, Fin de Jour’s unmistakable Parisian ambiance will whisk you into the lap of luxury.

Industria

Steampunk, the theme of the Industria-unit, is essentially a marriage of Victorian decor and industrial elements. This interior style derives from the industrial explosion in Britain during the 19th century. The Victorian’s use of steam power enabled their engineers to develop bigger, faster and more powerful ships, trains and factory machines. This led to unprecedented international trade and prosperity. Industria, one of Festina Lente’s six units, celebrates this assiduous spirit, equally associated with Johannesburg as the commercial capital of South Africa. In line with the Victorian’s puritan work ethic and the repurposing of existing resources, most of the décor in this unit has been lovingly recycled to create an industrial aesthetic. Celebrating the pioneering spirit is an antique globe and a large Gustave Troye map of the former Transvaal as it was before the Anglo Boer War. Bed lights made of wire mesh throw delicate patterns across this avant-garde space, which remind guests instantaneously of a time past and of a bright future ahead, while a painting of a Victorian lady looks down in silence. The bathroom walls and floor are covered in metro tiles and 19th century style bathroom fittings. The unit also includes a flat-screen television and opens out onto a beautiful vegetable garden.

Visualize a French hunting lodge with a modern twist and you have found Le Homestead, one of Festina Lente’s six units. The grey walls - affording a calm atmosphere after a long day of commercial pursuit in the City of Gold - is offset by crisp white linen, a grey-gold faux fur throw, a collection of retro bevelled mirrors and lustrous, raw silk drapes and cushions. Accentuating le thème de la chasse is a leather saddle hanging from the rafters, antelope skulls and horns mounted on the walls and weather-beaten hunting trophies to stimulate the spirit of success. His and Hers washbasins, a claw-footed bath and a shower plus the conveniences of a well-equipped kitchenette afford deluxe convenience. Le Homestead also has a small veranda to ponder or converse in the early morning or at dusk. The unit also includes a flat-screen television set with DSTV and a fireplace to relax in front.Each unit has its own unique character and provides a romantic and nostalgic escape into another world.
