Umbono Lodge extends to a size of 872ha which is made up of two separate parcels of veld 447ha to the West and 425ha to the East. The provenance of the property is that it was originally a dairy farm and this, with careful consideration to the natural environment, has been and continues to be restored to its original wildness state. Unfortunately, due to the intensive farming and the subsequent overgrazing of some areas on the property in the past, several alien plant species have taken root and continue to damage the fragile landscape. We therefore are in the process of removing or thinning out these invader species to create a more stable and diverse environment for our resident game.
Ticks and animal borne parasites- endemic to the area are an unfortunate hinderance to us stocking the property with a more diverse list of species than currently occurs. These present include, Kudu, Nyala, Bushbuck, Common Grey and Blue Duiker, Cape Grysbuck, Warthog, Bushpig, Common and Black Impala, Waterbuck, Blesbuck, Sable, Giraffe, Buffalo, White Rhinoceros, Caracal, Jackal and Brown Hyena. Bird species are diverse and include the majestic Fish Eagle that can regularly be heard calling from high above the nearby Bushman’s River.
Umbono will soon release a small pride of African Lions in a generously sized and fully enclosed habitat to assist the Born Free Foundation with rehoming cats that come from a multitude of unacceptable enclosures and habitats around the world. We will not breed with these cats however provide them with a secure habitat they can roam in as close to what nature intended.
This is just the start of our conservation efforts, and we plan to partner with various foundations in Africa to assist in the rehabilitation of endangered and marginalised species.
