Few other reserves offer as complete an outdoor experience as De Hoop – sea, sand dunes, the vlei, a floral sensation of rare fynbos plants, diverse antelope and the Potberg Mountains. Birders observe wading birds on the shores of the vlei while the Potberg Mountains are home to a colony of endangered Cape vultures. Hikers and cyclists have close-up encounters with bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, eland, baboons and ostrich. Activities are diverse and guests choose between various day walks through the rich fynbos plains or along the deserted coastline, or mountain biking along the many gravel roads or scenic game drives. Lazing on the beach and snorkeling in the many turquoise rock pools is simply another way to pass a rewarding day. Day visitors welcome, and restaurant open daily.
The De Hoop Reserve is situated just three hours drive from Cape Town on the world renowned Garden and Whale Routes - an ideal stop over en route from the Cape Winelands to Plettenberg Bay. It is in the Overberg region near the southern tip of Africa and can be approached from either Bredasdorp or Swellendam.
The Overberg area is characterised by quaint towns, a blossoming wine industry and delicious local dishes. The 36 000 hectares of De Hoop conservation area is a World Heritage Site comprising rich biodiversity and by over 70 kilometres of pristine coastline. A 19 km vlei (wetland) stretches across the reserve, which is on the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance.
Conservation Fee: R50.00 per person Applies to day visitors and R40 per person for overnight guests.
The Reserve gates open at 7am and close at 6pm.Late or early arrival by arrangement with management - extra cost.

The Opstal Cloete Cottage is a brand new suite situated between the Fig Tree and Cloete Suites. It is a lovely private suite decorated in luxury and is only a short walk from the Fig Tree Restaurant. This suite sleeps 2 people and has one bedroom with en-suite bathroom (shower & bath). The accommodation is catered for as it has no cooking facilities. Dinner and breakfast is included and served in The Fig Tree Restaurant.

The De Mond Villa is at the mouth of the De Hoop Vlei, giving it specatular views of the Ramsar Site with its prolific birdlife. The Melkkamer Foremans Cottage is charming and tucked away amongst the milkwood trees. It is a short walk from the vlei and the Melkkamer Manor House. It has three bedrooms and is fully equipped with kitchen and an outdoor barbecue area. The Melkkamer Homestead is a 10min boat ride from the Opstal.

The Cloete Suites are located in close proximity to the Fig Tree restaurant. The setup is two buildings with two inter-leading suites each. Each suite is beautifully decorated and has a seating area and an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower. Suite 1 of the 4 has a lovely fireplace for the cold winter period. Two of the Suites have beautiful views of the plains where eland and bontebok might pass by while the other two is set infront of the old majestic Fig Trees.
