Zingela is a picturesque tented camp situated on the banks of the Tugela River in the heart of an 8 000 hectare conservation area in KwaZulu-Natal.
We often get asked for a description of the accommodation and have found it easier to say what it is not than what it is! You will not be staying in a chalet, rondavel or tent. Each en-suite design is unique and has been built in unity with its immediate environment. We have used river stone, reed and canvas as materials. Larney Lane is ideal for couples while Hotel & Aloes are more suitable for family groups or friends who know each other. J. camp is an extension of main camp but as it has its own bush kitchen and dining area, it does double up as a Bed & Breakfast or self-catered camp for those who prefer that option. The recently refurbished House On Hill is the original Zingela farmhouse. Perched on a cliff overlooking the river, it is just down stream from J camp. We use it for both those who want catered accommodation as well as for groups who would prefer to self cater and join the main camp for selected meals. We can comfortably host groups of forty and erect extra tents for larger parties. As an example, Zingela has been the venue for weddings and adventure races where we have catered for over a hundred guests. Our permanent campsite situated between Main camp and Jame camp is open all year round while wild camping at Warthog island is best in the dry season.

Our unique accommodation embraces the outdoors and the building style is the opposite to “match box “units! Local stone, reed, canvas and thatch has been used to create rooms that can provide accommodation forup to sixty guests. Most units are “under the stars“ en-suite, have curtains for walls and are unapologetically rustic. Camp sites and fully-kitted “walk in “(as opposed to slither-in!) Safari tents have recently been added to the mix so we are now able to sleep groups of 100 plus.
Zingela is an unusual venue in that you cannot access it by anything other than a high clearance or 4x4 vehicles. The 26km road in is an adventure in itself! We encourage guests to bring their own 4x4s but we are able to do transfers from our meet and greet in Weenen. Do note that this journey takes an hour due to the challenging terrain so tighten your kidney belts and take time to experience this part of Africa.
Activities on offer in winter include abseiling, river floats and fly-fishing. Early morning game walks are always on offer. Do bring your own mountain bike if you are an enthusiast as our bush tracks make interesting off road trails. In summer it’s all about white water rafting and kayaking. We make good use of the 20kms of Tugela River that is at our disposal. Zingela is a child-friendly destination and a place where children can find refuge from the sophisticated outside world.
