Mbumbulu Bush Camp is OFF THE GRID bush camp, situated in the North Eastern part of KwaZulu Natal, also known as the Elephant coast, between Sodwana Bay and Kosi Bay in the Isimangaliso Coastal Forrest Wetland Reserve, that includes Lake Sibaya.
The camp is situated right in the centre of all the beaches that Isimangaliso Coastal Wetlands offers, from Sodwana Bay right up to Kosi Bay mouth on the border of Mozambique.

Sodwana Bay
Sodwana Bay is by far the number one diving and fishing spot in South Africa. Is known for deep sea fishing, fishing competitions, diving camps and pristine beaches.
9 Mile Beach
The drive to 9 Miles is quite a challenging 4x4 drive over the dune, separating the ocean and Lake Sibaya, but wort the drive. 9 Miles is highly recommended for a visit. From Mbumbulu Bush camp it is a day trip. Pack your happy box, charcoal, braai and spend your day driving/exploring Lake Sibya working your way to 9 Miles. 9 Miles offers you the best view over the ocean, set up your gazebo for the day. Low tide you can fish, spearfish, snorkel or just have a nice time on the beach.
Mabibi
is one of the well-known beaches in the area. A bit crowded comparing to the other beaches around
Island Rock (Manzengwenya)
a nice beach closest to the camp. Ideal for quick drives to the beach.
Lala Nek
Lala Nek is one of the hidden treasure on the Elephant Coast. The best fishing spot, low tide it forms a huge tidal pool that makes it the best snorkelling spot in South Africa. With the warm water and all the tropical fish species, it will be the nearest experience to scuba diving you will get without oxygen. You are able to get into the water with your scuba gear and enjoy the view on your own with no charter boat waiting for you!! On a good day you will see as much, if not more than going on a chartered dive costing you money!!!!
Rocktail Bay
good fishing and swimming. The chances are that you and your family will be the only people on the beach.
Black Rock
One of the best fishing spots Around. With its distinct black rock in the ocean and safe swimming beach, a must go! The parking area is next to the beach and very nice braai and picnic spots in the parking area.
Dog point
it is basically a viewpoint over the ocean. Very sensitive to marine life and sea turtles. It is closed for the public, but at least stop on the dune and drink a drink to the beautiful view it offers over the Elephant coast beaches and the Indian Ocean
Banga Nek
it is quite a drive from the camp. A challenging 4x4 route. This strip should start early because it is quite a long drive and a lot of time is taken up at the dunes as everybody tries to prove his vehicle and 4x4 skills. Banga Nek is the beach opposite Kosi Mouth. Good fishing, safe beaches, nice parking next to the beach with braai facilities, what’s left of it. From the camp you drive past Lala Nek, Black Rock, Roctail beach, Dog Point. A beautiful scenic route through the coastal forest. Worth the effort.
Kosi Bay Mouth
is one of the most pristine and most visited beach in SA. The Kosi Bay estuary system consists of a series of interconnecting channels and four lakes that flow into the sandy estuary mouth before reaching the Indian Ocean.
Isimangaliso Wetland Park is a huge protected area along the coast of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province. The park’s centrepiece is the vast Lake St. Lucia, home to large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, pelicans and flamingos. Elephants, giraffes and leopards inhabit the grasslands and forests of the nearby Western Shores and Charters Creek areas. To the north, Sodwana Bay is known for its colourful coral reefs.

Lake Sibaya is a scenic drive for around 20 minutes and offers the best Sunset to enjoy a cool refreshing Sundowner. Lake Sibaya is the Largest freshwater lake in Southern Africa.
Lake Sibaya is tucked against forested coastal dunes, parallel to Isimangaliso coastline. At an estimated 7 750ha, Lake Sibaya is the largest of its type and has been listed as a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance. Marine canyons offshore of Lake Sibaya and the presence of relict estuarine fauna suggest that the Lake was previously connected to the sea by a large river. Its pristine, crystal clear waters fringed by pure white sand are fed entirely by run-off from the high vegetated dunes reaching 165m. No rivers flow in or out of Lake Sibaya.
Lake Sibaya is home to KwaZulu-Natal’s second largest population of hippo and crocodiles. It is an important breeding, feeding and roosting area for a host of bird species. Surface water in the surrounding coastal plain often disappears completely during dry spells, making it the only source of permanent water for local fauna. The Lake supports a diverse array of zooplankton, 15 species of aquatic and 43 species of terrestrial molluscs, as well as flora and fauna unique to South Africa.
Lake Sibaya is classified as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife SA. The site has a diverse avifauna, including locally rare species and range-restricted species. A total of 279 bird species have been recorded at Lake Sibaya, 62 of which are closely associated with the Lake through their breeding, feeding or roosting habits. Although few species occur in large numbers, the Lake occasionally supports more than 20 000 waterfowl, some of which are at the southern limit of their distribution.
This section of the Park has another-worldliness that defies description. The undulating soft sand roads along the Lake’s shore are strictly 4×4 territory. Out here, you’ll feel as though you are a million miles away from home, cast back in time.
Another attraction from Mbumbulu is the Tembe National Elephant Park
Situated in Maputuland, the north-eastern region of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, adjoining the Mozambique border, Tembe Elephant Park is home to the province's biggest African elephant herd and its only indigenous elephants.
Tembe's African elephants used to be South Africa's last remaining free-ranging herd, at one time moving seasonally between Mozambique and Maputo land. In recent years they have sought refuge in the dense sand forests of Tembe to escape the depredations of border conflicts and landmines, and their continuous harassment by ivory poachers.
The magnificent African elephants, more than 140 in number, from massive fully-grown adults to juveniles, are Tembe's main attraction and make for spectacular viewing. The larger adults are physically the biggest in South Africa and signs of their presence are everywhere, clearly evident through the broken branches and foliage left behind from their voracious foraging.

Not only to the unique African elephant population but to a profusion of wildlife including the Big Five. Black and white rhino (more than 65 in total), buffalo, leopard, hippo, serval, eland, zebra, giraffe, hyena, jackal, wildebeest, nyala, kudu, water buck, reed buck, red duiker, warthog, and other small mammals thrive in abundance.
Tembe is also home to the rare and elusive suni antelope, one of the smallest and shyest species of buck in southern Africa, and the patient game-viewer is often rewarded with a sighting. Tembe is a bird-watching paradise, with more than 340 species recorded in the park - including the rare Rudd's apalis, the rufous-bellied night heron, the Natal nightjar and the Woodward's Batis.
This is an Africa that tourists seldom see, where an abundance of African elephants, game and rare species live in an environment unchanged by time.
