When the family bought "the beach house" in 1954, the milk was delivered by bike. Kleinmond still feels like a sleepy little town, but it’s hardly surprising that more have fled here since. The house is but a kite-tail’s length from the sea, the blue Atlantic stretching forth beyond a strip of fynbos. You can choose to watch the whales passing by (from August to December) from two spots, the sea-side verandah or the upstairs bedroom. The latter runs from one side of the house to the other under a vaulted ceiling and ocean-side the walls stop and the glass starts, forming a small square sitting room jutting out towards the blue. Here there is a soft couch and a rocking chair, perfect for siestas, sunsets (and of course whale-watching.)
Downstairs is equally adorable. It feels a bit like a Nantucket Island house: white, light, airy and adorned with simple understated beach furnishings. Interior designers, nota bene! It is totally self-catering here, but walk a kilometre west and you’ll find some untouristy cafés in the old harbour; a three-minute drive east will take you past a decent restaurant and miles of white, sandy, blue-flag beaches, perfect for kids, flying kites, swimming and walking.
Kleinmond, named after the small lagoon mouth at the sandy beach of Sandown Bay, offers much in the adventure category. The Kogelberg Nature Reserve near Kleinmond, is part of one of the two major core areas of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve namely the Kogelberg Core and the Groenland Mountain Core.
From the time you head out on the R44 from Gordons Bay you will be taking a journey back to nature - a break that revitalizes body, mind and soul. This coastal drive is rated as one of the most beautiful in the world, with great granite mountains carpeted in proteas rising out of the sea. Here nestle the four coastal villages of Rooiels, Pringle Bay, Betty's Bay and Kleinmond, with not a cinema or traffic light between them.
There are troops of shaggy Chacma baboons, rock dassies and lynx, and even wild leopard live on The Crags. Birders from all over the world flock here to tick off "lifers" such as the bank Cormorant and Cape rockjumpers.
The Kogelberg Core, home to some 1650 plant species of which 77 are endemic, is one of the world's 'hot spots' of biodiversity, and often regarded as the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
