Aasvogelkrans Farm Cottages & Camping is located on Aasvogelkrans Farm. A historic working farm established in 1834, located approximately 6 kilometers from the village of Nieu-Bethesda in the Sneeuberg region of the Karoo, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The farm spans 2,600 hectares of unspoiled nature, featuring a 10-kilometre stretch of the Gats River, breathtaking canyons, and an amphitheatre of mountains. This picturesque setting offers guests a tranquil retreat to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Karoo. The farm offers luxury cottages for guests seeking an upmarket and peaceful getaway. The historic Hoopoe Cottage, built nearly a century ago from stone and handmade bricks, has been lovingly restored to preserve its original charm while offering modern comfort. Featuring stone sourced from the farm, Spanish reed ceilings, a cosy wood-burning fireplace, and antique oak furniture, it evokes the timeless elegance of a bygone era. Hoopoe Cottage, named after the African Wood Hoopoe frequently spotted on the farm, is pet-friendly and designed for comfort and relaxation. The bedroom features a premium queen bed, a dressing table, a closet, and a hairdryer, with superior 95% goose down duvets for both summer and winter, ensuring ultimate comfort. You'll find a walk-in shower and heater in the bathroom and a deep vintage cast-iron bath, perfect for indulgence. The fully equipped kitchen has a stove and oven, fridge, microwave, kettle, and toaster, making self-catering a breeze. A world-class Charnwood wood-burning stove provides warmth and ambience beside the oak dining table. The open-plan living area seamlessly connects to the wide stone wrap-around veranda through double-glazed sliding doors, blending indoor comfort with breathtaking views of the imposing Aasvogelkrans or “Vulture Cliffs” that gave the farm its name. On the veranda, a built-in braai and outdoor dining table invite you to enjoy al fresco meals. Hot and cold air conditioning, a bathroom space heater, electric blankets, a wood-burning fire, and an outdoor braai ensure comfort in every season. Guineafowl Cottage is named for the striking black and white polka-dotted birds found in the area. Designed for comfort and relaxation, the cottage features two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom boasts a queen bed and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. The second bedroom offers two single beds that can be converted into a double if needed. Both bedrooms are fitted with superior 95% goose-down duvets for summer and winter, ensuring both extravagance and warmth. The second bathroom includes a shower and a deep antique bath, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. The open-plan living area is designed for both comfort and connection, making it ideal for families or two couples to unwind together. The fully equipped kitchen includes a stove, oven, fridge, microwave, kettle, and toaster, ensuring effortless self-catering. A wood-burning fire serves as the heart of the space, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere perfect for shared meals, late-night conversations, or simply curling up with a good book. Step outside onto the veranda, where a built-in braai and outdoor dining area invite you to enjoy al fresco meals while soaking in the tranquil surroundings. For year-round comfort, the cottage is equipped with hot and cold air conditioning, a bathroom space heater, and electric blankets. For guests who prefer not to fully self-cater, our Karoo Kitchen offers a selection of delicious pre-order options, including prepared farm meals, freshly baked sourdough bread, and breakfast or braai hampers made with seasonal produce from our farm. Sundowner picnic baskets are also available for a perfect evening treat. We are deeply passionate about the Karoo, its people, its spirit, and the ever-changing landscape that nourishes our souls. However, due to the historic mismanagement of grazing on our farm and the effects of climate change, the biodiversity of the Karoo veld has shifted over the past century. Once rich grasslands teem with life, the landscape has become more arid, dominated by unpalatable grass species and bushes, with bare patches of soil lacking sufficient grass cover. Through our commitment to regeneration, we are working to restore this delicate ecosystem. By purchasing our produce at Karoo Farm, every guest directly supports our vision of revitalizing this land—ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty and biodiversity of the Karoo for years to come.

Nieu-Bethesda is a small village known for its unspoiled beauty, artistic community, and historical charm. Surrounded by the Sneeuberg Mountains, the area features rolling plains, rugged cliffs, and big open skies, perfect for stargazing. The village has a strong artistic culture, with local potters, painters, and sculptors showcasing their work. There are craft shops, small galleries, and cosy cafés, making it a great place to explore at a relaxed pace. The local food scene includes traditional Karoo lamb dishes, home-baked bread, and fresh farm produce.
