The historic village of Rhodes, established in 1891, is located in the southernmost section of the Drakensberg Mountain range in the Eastern Cape Highlands of South Africa.
It is home to a unique guesthouse with great character known as Walkerbouts Inn that is positioned in an elevated position with one of the best views across the village and of the mountains beyond.
It has 8 en suite bedrooms, each tastefully decorated and with tea/coffee stations.
The Thankshjalot Pub in the main building is centrally situated between the dining room/lounge area and the spacious Function Room. A wide range of libations are on hand to cater for most tastes. It is a venue where many a tall story has been told, more often than not about ”the ones that got away” by flyfishing enthusiasts bemoaning the loss! It is also a meeting place where visitors can meet local residents and farmers who pop in for sundowners.
The Function Room is used for many purposes ranging from small weddings and conferences to being used as a venue for the annual Rhodes Animal Care project to housing live musical events to a village table tennis championship.
The garden outside Function Room is home to a Smokers’ Corner as smoking is not permitted inside the guesthouse or bedrooms. Our front garden, ideal for “relaxing with a view” has a duck-pond where our Pekin ducks splash and cavort. It is lined with Red-hot pokers that are a feast for the eye in summer. While flowering, they provide beautiful Malachite sunbirds with sustenance for several months.
On the culinary front, in addition to providing residents with breakfast, lunch and dinner, meals can also be enjoyed by visitors from elsewhere, albeit in passing or in residence in the village. Our renowned pizzas that feature home-made thin bases and pizza sauce attract folk from far and wide but which are not the only items on our menu. We can also tailor meal options to suit for private functions such as birthdays, anniversaries, reunions and the like. It is the central venue for the annual Dirt Road Wild Trout Association Fly fishing Festival, rated by luminaries in the fly fishing community as the premier flyfishing event in the country.
Pets are welcome by prior arrangement. Own bedding and food dishes must be brought to Walkerbouts Inn for the purpose.
All-in-all, Walkerbouts Inn is a quaint, hospitable home-from-home for the discerning.
