The Artscape Theatre Centre is an imposing, unmissable building that has formed part of Cape Town’s skyline for over four decades. Currently under the management of the Mother City’s provincial management, it was unveiled to the public in 1971. Initially, it was called the ‘Nico Malan Theatre Centre’, colloquially referred to as ‘The Nico’ after the then nationalist minister of the Cape. The centre was to replace the long-standing Alhambra Theatre – a venue which, before it fell into disarray, had screened bioscopes and fringe theatre productions. In 2001, the theatre changed its name to ‘The Artscape’ to align itself with South Africa’s new political dispensation.

While the centre has hosted several world-class productions in its time, the staging of the first performance on opening night is considered the most memorable. The performance was a world-renowned ballet called ‘Sylvia’, to which received a standing ovation from members of the audience. Since then, the Artscape has been the chosen venue for a various operas, ballets and performances.

Highlights over the years have included Andrew Lloyd Weber’s classical masterpiece ‘The Phantom of the Opera', the Broadway musical, ‘Jersey Boys’ and other high profile productions.

The Artscape comes fully equipped, with an 1187-seater opera house, a 540-seater theatre and a 139-seater arena. All these venues make provisions for wheelchair users and persons with related disabilities. The grounds also include rehearsal rooms, an impressive piazza and a cash bar which is opened during intervals.

The theatre is a home base for the Cape Town Opera and Fine Music Radio. The Cape Town Opera is a professional opera company that was founded in 1999.  During season, the company produces many productions in which are staged at the Opera House at the Artscape. Found in the foyer of the centre is the headquarters of Fine Music Radio, a station that is known for playing smooth jazz and classical music.
