Bloemfontein Golf Club is one of two golf clubs in the Free State city of Bloemfontein. It is a parklands course with 18 holes and lovely, vibrantly green fairways. The course is largely flat with a few gentle slopes interspersed with bunkers and water features to up the challenge on the course a little.
The golf course here was established in 1894 and was originally designed by Bob Grimsdell, South Africa’s pioneer golf course designer. However, it was later upgraded and underwent a redesign, undertaken by the company Matkovich and Hayes. Today it is a satisfying course to play on and is well-maintained, driven by the passion inherent in this member-based club.
The Bloemfontein Golf Club is an active club and has, over the years hosted many large golfing events such as the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament, as well as smaller interprovincial competitions. The club is also a regular host for local corporate golf days.
This Bloemfontein golf course is located near the airport towards the outskirts of the city. It can sometimes be exposed to mild winds, but these do little more than add a slight challenge to the game. The course, which is mostly tree lined, has good drainage so that when it does rain, the course isn’t out of action for too long.
The clubhouse, which boasts a bar, halfway house and pro-shop, overlooks the course, offering a serene view and peaceful ambience for a post-golf drink or meal. Gear such as clubs and golf carts can be rented at the shop, which also sells equipment and golf-related gifts.
