Accommodation near Botshabelo Nature Reserve - 2
The Botshabelo Nature Reserve is a
protected area in the Highveld part of Mpumalanga. It is situated 8
kilometres outside of the town of Middelburg, itself accessed via the N4 from
Pretoria or Nelspruit. The reserve provides a great family-outing destination
with many nature-centric activities to dabble in.
The history of Botshabelo, which means
‘Sanctuary’ or ‘Place of Shelter’, begins in the 1860’s when Alexander
Merenskey and Heinrich Grütner bought a farm in the Olifants River valley and
established a missionary station there. As is often the case, a small town soon
developed around the missionary station. In 1972 though the settlement and the
surrounding land was looking a little neglected and so the Middleburg
Municipality bought the land and restored it. This land became the Botshabelo
Nature Reserve.
The 23 000 hectare reserve consists of
a red, rocky landscape dotted with endemic cycads and various other plant
species. There are also plenty of birds to be spotted, which 'twitchers' will
be happy about. In addition there are plenty of plains game like blesbuck,
springbuck, black wildebeest and eland. There are also vervet monkeys and
baboons.
As far as activities go, there are 3 hiking
trails between 12 and 6 kilometres long as well as a number of downhill
mountain biking tracks. For a more leisurely way to spend your time, there is
also horse-riding and some lovely shaded picnic areas next to the river.
Botshabelo Nature Reserve is a small but
pretty reserve which deserves a visit, so if you happen to find yourself in the
Middleburg region, pay it a visit.
