The Cape Town International Airport was once named D.F. Malan Airport after the prime minister of the time. However, with the end of Apartheid came a politically neutral name-change as well as a change in ownership. In the early 1990’s, the Airport Company of South Africa (ACSA) was formed and today it owns many of South Africa’s major airports.
The Cape Town International Airport is the second busiest airport in South Africa and arguably the third busiest in Africa as a whole. Numerous domestic and international airlines are serviced there such as Kulula, Airlink and Mango (domestic carriers) and British Airways, South African Airways, Air Namibia and Emirates (international carriers). Between the variety of airlines, passengers in Cape Town can travel directly to (or from) myriad local and international destinations such as Turkey, England, Dubai, Mozambique, Namibia, the Netherlands and Singapore.
In 2010, major renovations of the airport were completed in time for the Soccer World Cup. As a result, the international and domestic terminals are joined by the new central terminal where all of the check-in counters for domestic and international flights are located.
The airport consists of 3 levels, with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the 1st floor. The airport offers a number of services such as duty free outlets, souvenir shops and books and clothing stores which operate on either side of the departures/arrivals gates. There are a number of restaurants too, located on the 3rd floor, giving some of them a good view of the run way.
The airport is located 20 kilometres from the city centre and is easily accessed by the N2. Transport to and from the airport can be via car (available for rent at the airport if necessary), metered taxi, private shuttle or the MyCiTi rapid transport bus which operates from 04.00 until 22.00. There are plenty of parking bays and travellers (especially business travellers) can leave their cars in a secure section of the garage for the duration of their respective trips.
